Calls for construction material imports to be monitored
20 December 2007

The importation of construction materials such as steel, cement and wood into Dubai needs continuous monitoring, the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) has said.
It said prices will increase as the sector continues to import raw materials.
"Focus should be turned to attracting new modern technologies, developing new and existing smelters and diversifying the assortment into innovative alternatives, such as refined aluminium based finish and semi-finished products," the DCCI said in a report.
"Focusing on economies of scale will decrease the cost of production and increase the competitiveness of the products," it added.
The construction sector accounts for 13 per cent of Dubai's and 12 per cent the UAE's gross domestic product.
